California's history began with the Spanish Missions. The 21 missions along California's El Camino Real ("The Royal Highway") represent the beginning of the present American civilization as we know it. The missionaries brought many things to California such as livestock, fruits, flowers, grains and industry.

Each mission tells a story about California and its past.
